When I was younger, about sixteen or seventeen, I started something I called ‘housesitting.’ I would scout the neighbourhood, peering into the hundreds of clean, square windows of all the houses until I found an empty one. Then I would climb in through it or pick the lock of a door; and once I’d get into the empty house, I’d just walk slowly through it. I stared at people’s photographs. I stared at their families and friends and smiles, skimming my fingers over the glass of their expensive mahogany photo frames. For hours and hours I would wander through these big, vacant mansions, gently touching everything with

My Bio

When I write about myself, I always say the wrong things. I always forget to mention that I am in love with the idea of being in love, although it’s only some abstract concept I’ll never truly understand. I never talk about how, when my house is empty of people other than myself, I turn up the music and waltz around with an imaginary partner to David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’. Sometimes it slips my mind to reveal how much I love my friends and how my time is always best spent sprawling on summer grass laughing and laughing until my cheeks go the colour of fire engines. Perhaps I won’t mention either my total love for Quentin Tarantino films or my unrivalled ability to quote whole passages of their script in one breath, and maybe I won’t even talk about my obsession with John Green novels. Sometimes you catch me at such an awkward time that it doesn’t even register for me to tell you of my fierce passion for music and how on a usual night I fall asleep with earphones tangled in my hair and one leg stuck above the blanket. Or, sometimes, I feel too shy to tell you I’m not afraid to die; that I think of dying as just a curtain call on a good performance. And even sometimes, I’m so busy with other things I just don’t have enough time to confess my burning love for bespectacled men with eye defects. Yes, sometimes I never get to tell you these things, and maybe someday I will. But for now, it seems you’ll have to live in perpetual mystery.
